VFX Breakdown Reels: Show Your Contribution Clearly
VFX breakdown reels help a producer understand what changed between the plate and the finished shot. The strongest examples make the artist's contribution clear without requiring the viewer to decode a complicated technical presentation. They show judgment as well as technique.
Lead with the final shot
Let the viewer understand the finished image before showing layers. A brief final playback establishes the creative goal. Then reveal the original plate and the changes that matter most.
Attribute the contribution precisely
State what you handled: tracking, roto, compositing, CG lighting, cleanup or supervision. If several artists worked on a shot, distinguish your role from the team's overall result. Clear credit makes the reel more credible.
Choose the reveal that explains the work
A wipe suits some composites; a sequence of meaningful stages suits others. Avoid showing every technical pass simply because it exists. A producer needs to see how the work improved the shot and which difficulty you solved.
Keep the pace readable
Give viewers enough time to compare. Dense labels, fast transitions and multiple simultaneous views can make excellent work difficult to judge. Use restrained text at a size that survives mobile playback.
Group shots by the kind of problem you can solve when that helps the intended audience. A commercial client may respond to product integration and invisible fixes; a film team may need environment or performance-related work.
Confirm release permissions
Check whether the footage, working layers and unreleased material can be shown publicly. Client approval of the finished commercial does not automatically authorize publication of every source asset. Keep the release version and permission record together.
End with current contact information and a clear description of the work you are seeking.
