Video Podcast Set Planning: Design for Three Camera Angles

Oct 21
2 min read

A podcast set may look balanced from the front and cluttered from every close camera. Video podcast set planning works best when the design starts with the actual angles: a wide view, a host view and a guest view. Each should feel intentional while belonging to the same conversation.

Place people before decoration

Set seating distance, sightlines and microphone positions first. Give speakers a comfortable way to look at each other without turning away from the useful camera view. Test the widest gestures and normal posture changes.

Build three distinct backgrounds

Check what appears behind each person's head and shoulders. Shelves, practical lights and branding should support composition without creating awkward tangents. Avoid relying on a logo visible only in the wide shot if most social clips use close-ups.

Design for vertical extracts

Preview a vertical crop from each camera. Leave enough room for captions and avoid placing essential branding at the far edge. Some setups benefit from a separate vertical composition rather than a tight crop of a wide horizontal image.

Keep lighting and sound compatible

Decorative surfaces can reflect light or sound in distracting ways. Test microphones, room noise and reflective backgrounds together. A visually attractive room may still need acoustic treatment or a different recording position.

Record a repeatable setup

Document camera positions, lighting, lens choices and set dressing. Photograph the finished arrangement. This makes the next session easier to match and reduces visible changes between episodes filmed weeks apart.

Before recording a series, create a short test conversation. Review the wide shot, close-ups and a captioned vertical clip to see whether the visual system works in the formats you will actually publish.
